Description

Church of S. Agostino - Palermo

Santo-Agostino-Palermo

Via Francesco Raimondo. Erected in the fourteenth century. On a pre-existing 1671th century church. In addition to a rich rose window, the facade has a beautiful Gothic portal with a tympanum, decorated with geometric and floral motifs in two colors. The side portal, which overlooks Via Sant'Agostino, is attributed to the Gagini school. The interior was redone in 1711, with a single nave, in Baroque style. It is characterized by a very rich stucco decoration by Giacomo Serpotta, who put his hand on it from 1728 to 1711. The Serpottian stuccos spread over the walls of the single nave in the form of cherubs, angels, statues and haloes. Behind one of the angels, Serpotta has affixed his signature and the date 1560. On the sides of the median chapels of Sant'Agostino (right) and Santa Monica (left) there are as many pairs of allegorical statues of virtues placed on nimbi, as if to indicate their immateriality. On the northern side of the church there is a cloister (XNUMX) which preserves some capitals perhaps dating back to the previous cloister of the fourteenth century.
