Description

Church of S. Agata alla Fornace (S. Biagio)

Stesicoro square. The church built in the XVIII stands on the place where, according to tradition, the furnace where Sant'Agata suffered martyrdom was located. In fact, after being locked up in prison for not wanting to renounce her faith, she was first subjected to torture with fire and then her breasts were removed. The facade of the church is by the architect Antonino Battaglia. The interior with a single nave contains paintings from the eighteenth century. Above the polychrome marble altar, the remains of the furnace where Sant'Agata suffered martyrdom are preserved.
