Description

Church of the Souls of Purgatory

The Church of Purgatory was designed at the end of the 1712th century by Pietro Castro, priest and architect, and completed in XNUMX, with the concave facade in Baroque style designed by the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico, buried in the same church. The façade presents twelve stuccoed stone statues of the twelve Apostles and Jesus, made by Alberto Orlando. The interior, in the shape of a Latin cross, renovated after the damage of the Second World War, is divided into three naves and preserves the sculptural groups of the Mysteries, made between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, which are carried in procession on Good Friday.

In the main altar there is a Christ on the cross with the statues of Mary and St. John the Evangelist at the foot. In the side walls of the presbytery there are two canvases representing the souls in purgatory with San Lorenzo, San Giuseppe and some angels.

The chapel to the right of the main altar is dedicated to S. Lorenzo and is covered with gilded wood sculptures.

Other works preserved inside:

  • A picture of the nativity of Jesus Christ and the picture of San Francesco, both believed to be the work of Giuseppe Felice;
  • a wooden madonna, sculpted by Pietro Croce;
  • a painting representing the Virgin and San Filippo Neri
  • a painting representing Saint Anthony of Padua in adoration.
