Church of Our Lady of the Child
Description

Church of Our Lady of the Child

Photo: web

Built entirely in lava stone it looks more like a house than a church, it has a central door of normal size and on the side walls of the small windows placed at the top. A tiny bell tower on the main façade summoned the faithful. For its stability, a wall was built close to a side wall.

This church represented the meeting point for many mothers who prayed to the Virgin Child for their daughters, invoking his blessing and protection. In the only side altar you can still admire a beautiful fresco depicting Mary Most Holy Liberator from material fire (lava) and spiritual fire.

Tradition tells that a few days before the earthquake of 1693 the aforementioned image emitted an abundant sweat and tears gushed from the eyes of the Blessed Virgin, harbingers of the unprecedented cataclysm. In solemn remembrance of the event we read: "In sweat vultus mei, hanc patriam Liberavi, ab huge earthquake years 1963".

The floor is in terracotta tiles, the gabled roof, visible are the cannizzi and the wooden beams that support the roof surmounted by tiles. This Church represented and still represents the meeting point for many mothers who pray to Saint Anne and the Virgin Child for all their children; in fact it is tradition to come on pilgrimage to this little church and to offer, in particular, the daughters under the protective gaze of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
