Description

Church of the Carmine - Piazza Armerina

The current church of the Carmine was built in 1651, on the ruins of an older one, dedicated to S. Alberto, dating back to the 1478th century; of this remains the elegant square bell tower in limestone on three orders, with windows with Catalan style moldings and crowned by battlements. Above the portal of the rustic facade of the church, a niche contained a small marble Madonna attributed to A. gagini (1536-500), now preserved in the Diocesan Museum. Through an arched door with an archivolt below it, you enter the adjacent cloister of the former Carmelite Convent, now used as private homes; the small cloister dates back to the early XNUMXth century and is made up on three sides by a slight escape of round arches, resting on slender monolithic sandstone columns and surmounted on one side by a series of coats of arms carved in stone.
