Cathedral of S. Lorenzo

cathedraletrapani

The church was built in 1421, subjected to repeated modifications in the following centuries. The current appearance dates back to the restoration of the eighteenth century, by the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico. In the second half of the XNUMXth century the stucco decorations were made.

The façade of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo is in Baroque style and has a pronaos in the lower part, while in the upper part it has a curvilinear trend. The pronaos consists of three bays, each of which corresponds to a round arch that opens onto the outside. The gate that closes the pronaos was made of bronze and wrought iron by Ennio Tesei in 1990.

The interior of the cathedral has a Latin cross and three naves. The central nave is covered with a barrel vault, while the two side aisles are covered with a cross vault; on the latter, the side chapels open, four on each side. The transept has, close to the back walls, two neoclassical altars with geometric marble decorations: the one on the right is dedicated to San Lorenzo martyr and houses the altarpiece of the Martyrdom of San Lorenzo, by Giuseppe Felice (XNUMXth century); the one on the right, on the other hand, is dedicated to Santo Stefano Protomartire and houses the altarpiece Martyrdom of Saint Stephen by Domenico La Bruna (XVIII century). The apse houses the painting Eternal Father by Domenico La Bruna (XVIII century).

The presbytery was built in 1995 by Umberto Benini Craparotta in various marbles.
