Description

Catacombs of Carini

Early Christian Catacombs (Source: Landscape Guidelines)

Antonio Salinas, Director of the National Museum of Palermo, on the recommendation of the owner Baron Starrabba carried out in 1899 a first exploration of a vast catacomb complex, encumbered by alluvial terrain; he was then able to empty part of it. In 1982 the director Bombace, sensitized by the writer to pay particular attention to the heritage. speleoarcheologico, he commissioned him to present a "Project caves" in which the research and documentation to be carried out in the monuments of the province of Palermo and Trapani were established. So I took the opportunity to include in the caves also the Catacombs of Villagrazia, at that time used as a mushroom farm, and the prehistoric necropolis of Ciachea di Carini.
