Castle of the Counts of Modica
The castle was built in 1350, by order of the feudal lords Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte, as a residence and defensive structure. Emperor Charles V stayed in one of the towers of the castle during his return from victory in Tunis on 1 September 1535. In the period between 1583 and 1589 it was the subject of three restorations. Starting from 1828 the Municipality of Alcamo took possession of the castle and in the following years it was used as a prison. In 1870 the castle underwent a further restoration.
