Castles of Favignana
Fort of Santa Caterina
According to the interpretation of some local historians, the castle or fort of Santa Caterina was built by Ruggero I d'Altavilla in the XNUMXth century in the place where there was a watchtower, built by the Saracens in the XNUMXth century. Rebuilt in its present form in the XNUMXth century by Andrea Riccio, lord of Favignana.
Punta Troia Castle
It was originally a Saracen tower. Around 1140 Roger II, king of Sicily, transformed the tower into a real castle. Over time, the site has also been a refuge for pirates and privateers. With the French Revolution, the "Real Castello del Maretimo" became a prison, especially for political prisoners: in 1793, the Castle had 52 political prisoners, amassed in a prison created in an old cistern called "la Fossa". The prison was closed in 1844 by King Ferdinand II. During the "great" wars it was used as a military sighting point.
