Calanques, woodlands and prairies of Riena (ITA020022)
Description

Calanques, woodlands and Riena meadows

Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA020022 - Hectares: 754

Description:

The SIC area includes a large area, mostly gullies, which extends within the basin
del Vallone Riena, a tributary of the Fiumara di Margana, which then flows into the Fiumara di Vicari. The
site extends from about 400 meters above sea level, until it culminates in the top of Cozzo Zaleranaro (865 m); Yes
covers a total of about 754 hectares, involving the territories of the municipalities of Prizzi, Castronovo,
Lercara Friddi and Vicari. It is mainly sandstones and quartzarenites alternating with clays, silty shales and
sand, marl and calcarenites from the Numidian Flysch (Oligocene-Lower Miocene). Based on the
Rivas-Martinez classification, the bioclimatic characters of the same area can refer as a whole
to the mesomediterranean thermotype (average temperature: 14-13 ° C), with a lower subhumid shadow type (rainfall
average: 700-800 mm) The vegetal landscape is mainly denuded and monotonous, in part
characterized by vast artificial forest plants with a prevalence of Eucalyptus; it is largely attributable to
series of the mesophilic deciduous oak forest dominated by Quercus virgiliana, linked to deep clayey soils.
The prevalence of the aforementioned types in addition to the cultural aspects that are found within the biotope is fruit
of the intense anthropic use directed since ancient times towards agro-forestry-pastoral exploitation
of the territory.
