Cala San Nicola
Cala San Nicola, already chosen in the Punic era as one of the first landings on the island. Here we found the remains of a plant for the processing of fish and the production of garum. Also of note is the Bagno delle Donne, a sort of nymphaeum from the Roman era. The site of Cala San Nicola is also rich in caves where there are sediments dating back from the Punic period to the early Christian one. In some of them it is still possible to see traces left by our ancient predecessors, such as niches, crosses engraved in the rock and short writings, now almost illegible. Late ancient and Byzantine necropolis have been found along the north-eastern side of Mount Santa Caterina: the Cave of the Arches (inside which there was a sepulcher called a tegurium or canopy, which was later destroyed, which represents a unicum for Western Sicily, dating back to the IV-V AD); there Cave of the Stele characterized by the presence, on the pillar in front of the entrance, of a stele written in Byzantine or medieval characters. Under the inscription there is a cross engraved, so it is more than likely that we are in front of a Christian funerary epigraph. Also interesting is the Well Cave, an early Christian hypogeum, on the north-east side, which presents numerous fish-like representations and an inscription that could be interpreted as an invocation to Sant 'Erasmo. Several crosses and Christian inscriptions have also been found near the Ficarra II and Ficarra III caves, on the north-eastern side of Mount Santa Caterina. It is probable that they are attributable to different eras, from early Christian antiquity to the 600s. (Text source: https://www.egadivacanze.it/isole-egadi/archeologia-delle-egadi.html)
