Flascio wood (ITA070007)

Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA070007 - Hectares: 3022

Description:

The area in question coincides with the high basin of the Flascio river located on the southern slope of the Nebrodi. The altitudes are between 900 and 1600 m, with
normally siliceous substrates represented by flysch, schist and gneiss. The bioclimate is part of the upper subhumid mesomediterranean. Along the slopes of the valley yes
fairly extensive and well-preserved woodland formations are found, consisting mainly of thermophilic beech-woods, cerrete, holm-oak and mixed oak woods. Well
Herbaceous formations such as mesophilic meadows and wet meadows are also represented. Along the course of the river there are herbaceous or hygrophilous aspects
chaplaincy and scrub with willows and poplars.
4.2Quality and importance
It is a fairly significant site concerning a river area affected by mountain forest formations, especially deciduous trees, with various aspects of
both herbaceous and shrubby degradation. Frequent are the hygrophilous aspects linked to spring waters, in which the rare endemism Petagnia saniculifolia is located, and
to the river bed. Here there are also various entities which in the regional area are rare or considered to be of significant phytogeographic interest, which are in turn mentioned
in the list shown in section 3.3 (D) .The site hosts an interesting herpetofauna, which includes a conspicuous portion of Sicilian species, some of the
which deserve careful and targeted safeguards. The invertebrate fauna is very rich and articulated both as regards the freshwater and riparian species,
than the nemoral ones. There are numerous Sicilian and sometimes Nebrodensi endemics and / or rare species and stenotopes. The arthropod fauna of the
open environments (meadows and pastures) with species of wide ecological value, but also faunal elements of more ancient origin linked to the hot-xeric climatic phases
which characterized the end of the Tertiary sector. These species remained set aside and survived in limited districts during the subsequent temperate-humid phases
and the Quaternary glaciations, in recent times have found in the pastures an environment in which to expand, entering into competition with those of wide value
ecological; they could be in critical conditions in case of degradation and impoverishment of this environment.
