Basin of the Letojanni stream (ITA030004)

Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA030004- Hectares: 1308

Description:

It is a hilly-mountain valley crossed by a perennial stream (Letojanni stream), affected by siliceous rocky outcrops (schists and gneisses) and limestone, with altitudes ranging between 100 and 1000 m. The bioclimate is of a purely Mediterranean type with a thermotype between the upper thermomediterranean and the mesomediterraneo and an ombrotype between the dry superior and subhumid. The most significant vegetational aspects are the ripisilva to Platanus orientalis and Salix gussonei, the scrub of Euphorbia dendroides, and the chasmophilous vegetation of the rocky walls rich in endemisms. Wooded formations are also found evergreen to Quercus ilex and deciduous to Quercus virgiliana.

The site shows a certain naturalistic and landscape interest due to the presence of natural vegetational aspects still in a good state of conservation. Here yes they also find various entities that in the regional area are rare or considered to be of significant phytogeographic interest, in turn mentioned in the list reported in the section 3.3 (D). The cliffs and cliffs also represent real or potential nesting or resting sites for numerous species of birds of prey, while the environment ripale and fluvial hosts a relatively rich and diversified herpetofauna. The invertebrate fauna is also of considerable scientific interest, including both Sicilian endemics and those of the Peloritan area alone, as well as relict species or species that in Sicily have an area limited to the Peloritani only and sometimes also to the neighboring ones Nebrodi.
