Equipped state property area Santa Maria - Monte Lauro

From Buccheri follow the signs for Caltagirone, SS n. 124, and less than 300 meters on the left, immediately after the Madonna delle Grazie church, a small road allows us to enter the Forestry Property, characterized by a gate with pillars on the top of which pine cones have been carved in lava stone. This is the obligatory access to the equipped area, which in truth there are 4 in the whole wooded complex, reachable by means of special signs, along the main path.
A first equipped area built shortly after the gate on the left, going up, is quite suggestive because it is built around a chestnut stump under which benches and tables have been placed and in a small open space a cooking point. From this first area it is possible to reach the second and the third which are all located very close and have the same construction characteristics.
In practice, both the tables, the benches and the fire points were made by working the lava stone, giving the areas a particular suggestion.
There are also fountains built with the same black stone. As well as chestnut trees, the top of the place is rich in downy oaks, pines and cypresses of various species. The fourth area is located in the highest part of the Monte Lauro forest property, near a forest house, and whose vegetation all around is mainly made up of pines. In this area there are only benches and tables.
The various roads that wind through the state property can be traveled on foot, allowing hikers to better savor the taste of the forest in this tree-poor part of Sicily.

The information on the equipped state-owned areas has as its main source the website of the Regional Forestry Department of Sicily (continuously updated) to which is added a very interesting brochure entitled "The State Equipped Areas in Sicily" of the same department published in 1999 with the Editorial Coordination of the 8th Group - Promotion, Development and Research, editors Agostino Gatto and Valeria Restuccia. Further information was obtained from direct access to the areas and from interviews with experts and operators in the sector.
