Rafforosso state-owned equipped area
Starting from Gela, take the SS n. 117 to Piazza Armerina. After about 15 Km. You will meet the entrance to the wood characterized by a forest gate near a red roadhouse.
The wooded complex of Raffo Rosso had begun a few kilometers before this gate due to the presence of imposing eucalyptus trees.
The equipped area, the destination of our trip, is indicated by a special signage just before this forest gate. After about a kilometer of dirt road between the eucalyptus that seem to touch the sky, even if quite ancient, you arrive at the equipped area. Wooden benches and stone tables, inserted in a sort of "gazebo" made with local caning, are the characteristic of this area and the place where we will spend a morning in contact with nature. There is also a parking area, water points and fire points that make the place more welcoming. This area is very popular in the summer and represents the first outpost of the whole wooded complex which almost uninterruptedly extends up to the municipality of Mazzarino. In this vast area it is worth visiting the wooded areas of Giasi, Gibliscemi, Bubbonia and Monte Formaggio, whose vegetation cover, in this internal area of Sicily, is almost exceptional. Throughout the wooded complex of Raffo Rosso, which covers approximately 2.500 hectares, you can make excursions along the many service roads.

Note on Sources
The information on the equipped state-owned areas has as its main source the Internet site of the Regional Forestry Department of Sicily (constantly updated) to which is added a very interesting brochure entitled "The State Equipped Areas in Sicily" of the same department published in 1999 with the Editorial Coordination of the 8th Group - Promotion, Development and Research, editors Agostino Gatto and Valeria Restuccia. Further information was obtained from direct access to the areas and from interviews with experts and operators in the sector.
