Baronia state-owned equipped area

Starting from Vita, along the municipal road that leads to the Baronia Forestry Property, which overlooks the Municipality, after entering the wooded area, you will soon arrive at the equipped area located less than 2 km from the last houses of Vita Nuova. Along the way, a special signage has rightly directed us to the destination of our journey.

The Baronia wooded complex, in which the equipped area is located, is made up of Mediterranean pines, in an extension of about 90 hectares. In this environmental context, an equipped area was created which received a collective consent by placing wooden tables and benches in the undergrowth, in a specially prepared area, children's games, cooking points, waste bins and a parking space for cars. To date, the toilets have not been built.

The original pine wooded coverage of the wooded complex with gradual works of intervention is giving way to the oak species typical of the area, downy oak and holm oak, implementing what in forestry terms is called "reconversion".

This intervention will allow the affirmation of a more durable wood than conifer essences which are highly flammable and more subject to fire risk and which, after the calamitous event, make the soil completely bare.

Note on Sources

The information on the equipped state-owned areas has as its main source the website of the Regional Forestry Department of Sicily (continuously updated) to which is added a very interesting brochure entitled "The State Equipped Areas in Sicily" of the same department published in 1999 with the Editorial Coordination of the 8th Group - Promotion, Development and Research, editors Agostino Gatto and Valeria Restuccia. Further information was obtained from direct access to the areas and from interviews with experts and operators in the sector.
