Description
This is placed in front of the home of Judge Falcone, in the aftermath of the Capaci massacre ficus macrophylla immediately became the symbol of the rebellion against the mafia and the rebirth of the Sicilian people.
Under this tree hundreds of citizens gathered and still today gather to protest against the violence of the mafia and the ineffectiveness of politics. Sit-ins, marches, torchlight processions, human chains were the visible testimony of an emotional shock, an anger and a desire for change that had never reached these levels in Palermo. Then the Committee of Sheets was born and the famous slogan "You did not kill them: their ideas walk on our legs".
Today the Falcone tree retains its value as a civil monument, a place of remembrance and a warning for the future. Its trunk is continually covered with letters, photographs, flags, left as lay ex-votos as a sign of affection and gratitude.
