Militello in Val di Catania , until 1861 called Militello in Val di Noto, is a municipality in the Province of Catania, has 7.651 (Istat 2014) and is one of the eight municipalities included in the Unesco Heritage list within the site "The late Baroque cities of the Val di Noto". Militello in Val di Catania is located on the extreme northern reaches of the Iblei mountains, 45 km from Catania and 35 km from Caltagirone. Its territory has been inhabited since the Copper Age.

Church and former Benedictine Monastery (Town Hall)

abbey of San BenedettoIn Piazza Municipio 1. The monastery and the adjoining church were built between 1614 and 1646. The Monastery is currently the seat of the town hall. The church has a decorated facade and features a rustic ashlar typical of the local baroque. The Church has a single nave with six side chapels. The interior has stucco decorations, and valuable marble altars from the first half of the 700th century. The interior also contains a beautiful choir of carved walnut wood from 1734, a canvas "the last Communion of St. Benedict", painted by Sebastiano Conca (1741) and a silver bust from 1719.

 

Baldanza Palace - Money

money boldnessAt the corner between Via Senatore Maiorana and Via Umberto I with one of the elevations visible from Piazza Municipio. Built in Baroque style in the XNUMXth century, it is currently the seat of the Pro Loco.

Nicolò and its beautiful bell tower were completely destroyed by the violent earthquake of 1693. The construction of the new building was begun in December 1721 and in March 1740 the new Mother Church was blessed and opened for worship; it is composed of three naves, separated by pillars, on a Latin cross plan. In 1755 the second superior order of the Church was built by the famous Catania architect Francesco Battaglia; while in 1776, again based on a design by Battaglia, the bell tower was completed where the bells of the old church were installed. In 1788 the Church was also dedicated to the SS. Savior. In 1904 the construction of the new Mother Church was completed with the construction of a dome about 30 meters high (by S.Sortino), which is one of the first examples in Sicily of reinforced concrete construction. Much of the rich artistic heritage of Militello (paintings, silver, statues, vestments, etc.) is kept in the Mother Church and in the annexed Museo S. Nicolò. Along the side aisles there are also five altars of exquisite workmanship recovered from the old matrix.

Niceforo Palace

Niceforo PalaceXVIII century. Via Giambattista Baldanza 19. The Palace built in the eighteenth century on two levels. It has an interesting portal full of anthropomorphic figures surmounted by a balcony with wrought iron railing and anthropomorphic corbels.

The Palace (Ex Caruso della Sanza) is located in Via Giambattista Baldanza n.1. Built in the eighteenth century on two levels, on the second level there are typical baroque balconies with rounded wrought iron railings supported by corbels in which the typical masks of the baroque period appear.

Church of S. Maria della Stella worldheritagesite

church of santa maria della stella In Via Porta della Terra at the height of Via Rizzo. The Church of S. Maria della Stella, following the earthquake of 1693, was rebuilt in place of the Church of S. Antonio Abate. The rebuilding of the Church began in 1722 and its opening for worship took place in 1741; while the bell tower dates back to the mid-800th century. The basilican plan has three naves. Beautiful chapels adorn the Church where there are numerous masterpieces of art, including a magnificent "glazed polychrome terracotta" representing the Nativity of Our Lord: the work is attributed to Andrea della Robbia, Tuscan sculptor and ceramist. Another work preserved in the Church is an eighteenth-century altarpiece called the Nativity of Mary by Olivio Sozzi. Inside the Church, in the rooms intended for the sacristy, there is the Treasury of S. Maria della Stella which collects a wide variety of precious objects, silver and sacred furnishings.

Calvary Church

The Baroque Portico was built in 1762 on a project by Francesco Battaglia in 1762, under which the Passion of Jesus Christ is represented on the day of Good Friday. The plan is a Latin cross with the apse enclosed by a lantern and flanked by two lobes for the minor chapels.

 

 Latrini Palace

Latrini palaceNeighborhood of San Giovanni. Via Latrini. Built in the Baroque style in the XNUMXth century. It has interesting balconies with anthropomorphic figures.
